EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that
enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing
life experiences.
Repeated studies show that using EMDR therapy, people can experience the benefits
of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.
Developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987, it is a unique and powerful therapy that helps
recovery from problems triggered by traumatic events. EMDR stops difficult memories
that are causing distress by helping the brain to reprocess them properly.
It is best known for treating PTSD.
EMDR is not for everyone. Before starting the desensitisation process, I will carry out a
multi-step assessment and write out a treatment plan.
Therapy sessions can be longer than the standard 50 minutes, up to 90, with the number
of sessions varying from a few to ten plus, dependent on the number of unprocessed memories
you wish to be desensitised to and reprocessed.
